"Many SMEs see the cost of operating a fleet of cars or vans as a necessary evil. But often they don't realise just how much money they are wasting through poor fleet management - especially when it comes to vans. Many companies allow drivers to use their vans at night and weekends and never even monitor how much fuel is being used.

I have one client whose employees were using up to £70.00 of fuel at weekends, and adding over 15000 miles per annum onto the vehicles' overall mileage. It was costing thousands of pounds a year in fuel and deprecation.

They saved huge amounts by implementing the most basic simple monitoring procedures such as looking at vehicle and fuel costs. So please check if fuel is drawn on a Friday afternoon and a Monday morning. Then ask yourself, do you really want to subsidise your employees' recreational mileage?"
