Turning waste into gold

With winter on the way the countryside looks quite dead. But it's just a fallow period before growth starts once more. In their latest column the Fenland Bogtrotters offer their usual concise commentary on stocks, shares and agrarian matters.

Winter is approaching and the fields lie so bald and empty after the harvest that you feel like nothing could ever grow on them again. Of course, in time, the fields will be productive again. We've just got to wait for the right season.

It's much the same with one of the new companies we have invested in. Recently we bought into a small AIM-listed plastics company called 3DM, which makes incredibly tough building materials out of recycled plastic waste. We paid 60p and the price rose to 73p although it has subsequently fallen to 47.5p so we need to keep our nerve.

A serious company with a brilliant offering at just the right time, 3DM is in the process of buying a highly complex piece of machinery that will allow it to convert medical waste into plastic. When that comes on stream later this year, we believe the share price may even double. On the other hand, any unforeseen problems could keep it down.

Mind you, the shares won't pay dividends for at least two or three years. Makes farming look like some sort of get-rich-quick scheme by comparison.

(Readers should be aware that the value of stocks can fall as well as rise and should undertake their own research or obtain professional investment advice.)
