The wind blows fair

With winter well and truly here, the countryside has gone rather cold and quiet. But the wind farms and other renewable energy resources continue to power away. The Fenland Bogtrotters offer their usual earthy commentary on stocks, shares and matters of the soil.

They are still pulling up the beet and potatoes from the fields, despite a fortnight of heavy frost that has frozen the river solid. The only things moving in the surrounding area at the moment are the vast windmills of the wind farm at Coldham, whose sails look like striding giants against the clear winter sky.

We are particularly keen on renewable energy these days. It’s partly for ethical reasons and partly because we’ve just bought into an AIM-listed company called KP Renewables, which specialises in wind farms, water power, biomass etcetera.

It is a subsidiary of US company Kwikpower International, which came to the UK market a few months ago. Shares launched at 75p then fell to the mid-40s, which is when we bought in. Within a couple of months they shot up to 69p on a very small volume of trading. It suggests that something very positive is happening there.

Now we are torn between taking a quick profit and holding them longer. It’s a dilemma familiar to all farmers – when to harvest the crops? Do we hang on for more growth or do we cash in while the sun is still shining?

(Readers should be aware that the value of stocks can fall as well as rise and should undertake their own research or obtain professional investment advice.)
